As part of the DesigNYC program EOA was partnered with New Destiny Housing Corporation, a non-profit that builds housing for survivors of domestic abuse and their families. New Destiny needed interior design for a children's playroom and a community room for a new project in the Bronx. In the community room EOA created two separate yet flexible seating areas defined by area rugs and furniture placement. The furniture is light and can be moved and reconfigured to accommodate for various tenant events; group exercise, family gatherings and one-on-one meetings. Custom cabinets, brightly painted, were designed to store fold-up and stacking furniture and other items. Overall, the space has the feel of a comfortable living room with added versatility and function. To create a child-friendly playroom we specified a floor of striped and solid carpet tiles to define the space into blocks for different activities, added vibrant beanbag poufs and chairs and designed cabinetry to accommodate a variety of uses: cubbies and cabinets for toy storage and a bench for seating. Chalkboard painted cabinets encourage drawing and, as an alternative to tacks and tape, ticket racks used in restaurant kitchens are mounted to the wall for displaying the children’s art.
